Art is seen and expressed in various ways—through dancing, acting, or even self-expression in fashion. For Cholo Ayuyao, a professional doll artist and a jewelry and embellishment designer, art is a fusion of fashion and creativity, integrated into miniature dolls. For him, each of his masterpiece  evokes emotion, meaning, and artistry.

“Dolls aren’t just for play; they are a powerful medium for art and a way to spark creativity,” Cholo expressed.

His journey into this craft began when a friend brought a doll that he wanted to dress. From that spontaneous moment, his passion for crafting dolls grew into something meaningful, leading to the recognition of his art and dedication.

He also shared how his perception of dolls evolved over time. “I played with them when I was young but never really saw them as a vessel for art like I do now. As I delved deeper into the world of dolls at the start of this journey, I discovered a world of beautifully intricate creations from all over the world,” he said.

Doll couture, a form of art that involves designing fashionable dolls, allows artists to pour their creativity into custom-made or original doll designs. For Cholo, it is an avenue to release creative juices that are flowing inside his mind. This is where he channels his frustration as a frustrated fashion designer on a human scale. Nevertheless, he feels that he belongs in this industry and that this craft is his true calling.

“It feels like I’m meant to be here— in this craft.”

When asked about his favorite masterpiece, he said, “My favorite pieces are actually the terno looks I’ve created over the years. It’s my way of showcasing Filipino fashion to the world.”

Finally, Cholo emphasizes the importance of dedication and grit in this field. His advice to aspiring artists is to work hard, study their craft, respect different cultures, and maintain a strong work ethic.
