Steph Tan: The Stuff of Fairytales

Steph Tan is a Manila-based designer who has been carving a name for herself in the eveningwear and bridalwear industry. This year, her creations have become more visible as a number of Manila’s bright young things have worn her pieces on social functions and entertainment events – all of which have been religiously archived on social media platforms.

A relative newcomer in the industry, Steph is a product of the prestigious Central Saint Martins in London where she took up couture bridalwear, pattern making and embroidery. This training is evident in her distinctly ethereal dresses so loved by many of her younger clienteles from the likes of teen singing sensation – Janella Salvador to teen queen – Liza Soberano. She also trained under the tutelage of Jojie Lloren and Joey Samson amongst others in the art of fashion construction and draping – valuable skills in making it into the formalwear market.

Steph now specializes in made-to-order or customized eveningwear as well as formalwear for brides and their entourage at her Quezon City atelier. Her gowns are carefully handcrafted using fabrics sourced abroad from fine laces, exquisite tulles, soft chiffons and sheer organdy. Putting her training into practice, she also introduces fine beadwork and embroidery into her creations.

She is directly involved in the creative process of a garment from the inception of design to the final fitting. Fit is of importance for the designer and her team. Her knowledge in constructions and her style aesthetic enable her to make pieces that are flattering not only to her clientele’s personality but more importantly, their figure regardless of their body type.

For her latest collection, she took inspiration from the Mirabell Gardens in Salzburg. Her collection, entitled: The Stuff of Fairytales – consists of dreamy dresses in frothy frills and layers of romantic lace. It features subtle details such as ostrich feathers, wavelike crystalized patterns and 3D appliques that are fitting for a fashion fairytale princess’s wardrobe on a European sojourn.

This whimsical collection, with its nod to the garden’s interesting landscape layout, rich textures and refreshing atmosphere explores the dynamics between modern and classic, sophisticated and fun through the use of lines, colours and textures. The bridal looks from this collection are delicate with some structure to hold its form. The pieces are the very definition of pretty and feminine. They’re light and easy with embellishments that display finesse and restraint.

Steph Tan continues to lean towards classic silhouettes that reflect her modern approach to styling and dressing. Her garments are fun and playful in the way it makes the wearer shimmy and shake. She likes to combine different types of fabrics and plays with colors to create different shapes and textures. Her style is sophisticated and strongly feminine with an edgy twist.
