The engagement of Ryan Uy & Rosenthal Tee
For designer Rosenthal Tee, her Ting Hun with fiancé Ryan Uy was not just a traditional Chinese engagement ceremony, it was a canvas for storytelling.

“I could never quite envision myself ever following with the traditional use of red and golds,” she shared.
Instead, she approached the occasion much like one of her fashion shows, weaving in personal style while honoring heritage.

The celebration’s palette centered on lush olive green, a color she has always considered lucky. With stylist Kathy Sy King, the backdrop came alive with textured fans, lanterns, and vibrant florals in purple, yellow, magenta, and a touch of red.

“It might seem jarring, but I think juxtaposed well as a whole in creating an abundant punchy backdrop,” she explained.

Music was another personal touch. With guidance from Camille of Tinghun Tris, Rosenthal curated a playlist blending oriental flair with pop orchestra. To make the ceremony more inclusive, emcee Max Tiu delivered portions in English for Rosenthal’s Filipino friends and classmates, ensuring everyone appreciated the symbolism.

Her gown was a masterpiece: a fully hand-beaded cape featuring their zodiacs, family symbols, and pagodas representing their shared future.

“The dress was an homage to 1920s flapper influences and chinoiserie,” she said, styled in pomelo pink and chartreuse green. Ryan complemented her vision in a heather grey double-breasted suit by designer Vin Orias.

Traditions were largely preserved, with one unique addition, a painting gifted by Rosenthal’s parents to the couple.

For the menu, Ryan and his father ensured East Ocean prepared a spread rich in umami, symbolizing prosperity and joy.

Rosenthal also emphasized family presence: “Oftentimes, the focus is solely on the couple. We wanted our elders, family, and friends to shine, too.”

With styling, photography, and heartfelt details, their Ting Hun became a memory not just of union, but of further modernizing the tradition.
