The engagement of Ralph Lendl Tanchip and Mariell Chuateco
In every Ting Hun, tradition sets the tone, but for Lendl and Mariell, it was also about writing their own modern love story.

Their journey toward the engagement ceremony began with one guiding question: How do we blend tradition with our personal style? For the couple, the answer was simple; honor what matters, refine what doesn’t, and celebrate in a way that feels authentically theirs.

“As much as possible, we wanted to keep most traditions,” Mariell shared. “But also make it modern, skip the ones that don’t make sense anymore, and make everything practical and most importantly, stylish.”

Planning began with identifying which customs held deep meaning for both families. They chose to keep the essential elements: the presentation of the dowry, the exchange of watches symbolizing commitment, and the meaningful “walking back” ritual that signifies the bride’s formal introduction and acceptance. These timeless traditions grounded the celebration in respect and heritage.

At the same time, they made thoughtful edits. They skipped the traditional buying of the tela (cloth) and the ceremonial combing of the hair, opting instead for a streamlined program that felt intentional and contemporary.

For Mariell, personal style shone brightest through her fashion choice. “What made it most ‘me’ was my gold crop gown,” she said. The modern silhouette paired with a classic hue beautifully captured the balance of old and new; radiant, confident, and unforgettable.

The menu, a vital part of any Ting Hun, was lovingly curated by Ralph’s mother. “My MIL made my whole menu,” Mariell shared.
“She made sure to follow tradition and make all guests’ tummies happy.” Symbolic dishes representing prosperity, sweetness, unity, and abundance were thoughtfully prepared, because in Chinese tradition, food speaks blessings over the couple’s future.

As the program unfolded, the focus shifted from rituals to celebration. The couple ensured drinks were flowing, the atmosphere warm, and every guest cared for.
“Make the menu and drinks flowing, be accommodating, and know how to throw a great party,” Mariell advised.

They also prepared personalized gift bags filled with items they genuinely loved, small but heartfelt tokens of gratitude for their families.

The evening naturally transitioned into joyful festivities, with guests eagerly anticipating the after-party. “Everyone looked forward to partying after,” Mariell laughed. And of course, her gown remained a highlight.

WE Tip: When planning your Ting Hun, begin with understanding the meaning behind each tradition. Keep the rituals that resonate with your values and family, and thoughtfully adapt the rest. A Ting Hun is not about perfection, it’s about intention, unity, and setting the tone for a joyful marriage ahead.
