Modern Take on a Timeless Ting Hun

The engagement of Calvin Sy & Glynmae Vilal

From the moment Calvin and Glynmae began dreaming of their Ting Hun, they knew one thing for sure, they wanted a celebration that honored tradition while staying true to who they are as a couple. It wasn’t about following every rule to the letter, but about choosing what felt meaningful and real for their families and their love story.

Planning started with a brave design decision. Instead of the classic red and gold, the couple chose a softer, more modern palette of pink and green, inspired by the lotus flower.

For Glynmae, the symbolism struck deeply. “The lotus symbolizes union, growth, and harmony,” she shared. “It rises beautifully from the water, representing love that stays pure and steady through life’s changes. That felt so fitting for us.” Pink stood for affection, green for fresh beginnings, and together, these colors defined their unique take on a timeless celebration.

As the date approached, Calvin and Glynmae focused on what truly mattered: family. On the day itself, they walked into their Ting Hun with hearts wide open, keeping the most meaningful traditions, the entrance, the tea ceremony, the gift and ring exchange, and the sharing of sweets. “These moments symbolized the joining of our two families,” Glynmae said. “That was the most memorable part of the day for us.”

Because both are Christians, they chose to skip selecting a “lucky” date or time. Instead, they opted for a joyful, practical day when their loved ones and dream suppliers, including the elegant setting at Shangri-La The Fort, could all be present. “Our focus was simply celebrating love, commitment, and our future together,” she added.

The feast reflected that same spirit of unity. There may be no fixed Ting Hun menu, but symbolism guided every choice; noodles for long life, fish for abundance, and sweet desserts for a sweet marriage. A lauriat-style spread encouraged sharing and connection.

“Since Ting Hun is about two families becoming one, we loved that everyone ate together, side by side,” Glynmae shared.

What made everything even more special was that this Ting Hun was also the couple’s very first Ting Hun to attend. The laughter during the tea ceremony, the flowers given to single ladies, the thoughtful giveaways, each moment brought both families closer.

Calvin reflected simply, “It wasn’t just a ceremony. It truly became a celebration where everyone felt included.”

WE Tip: The key to a meaningful Ting Hun is balance. Keep the traditions that honor family and heritage, but don’t be afraid to personalize the colors, menu, and program. When your celebration reflects both culture and character, it becomes a heartfelt beginning, not just a ritual.
