The engagement of Jann Rafael and Joan Cai
When two people come together in love, it’s more than just a union of hearts, it’s the merging of families, values, and traditions.

For Jann Rafael “Jaffy” Gotauco and Joan Cai Ong, their Ting Hun was exactly that: a heartfelt celebration that honored their Chinese heritage while reflecting who they are as a modern couple.
“Tradition is already innate in ourselves,” Joan shared. “So our inspiration had a personal blend of modern perspective with our traditional foundation.”

From the start, Jaffy and Joan knew they wanted to stay true to the meaning of the Ting Hun—a symbolic engagement ceremony that binds two families in harmony and respect.
They carefully preserved the essence of the occasion: the serving of juices and tea, the exchange of symbolic gifts, and the banquet that follows to celebrate the union. “We really don’t get to honor tradition as much, considering our generation,” Jaffy said. “So having this opportunity means a lot to both of us.”
For the couple, the ceremony wasn’t just about rituals, it was about connection. “At the end of the day, the most important part of the ceremony are the family members,” Joan said thoughtfully.

“Everything else is just added aesthetic to make the ambiance more authentic.”
Their approach reflected grace and balance, a mix of reverence for the past and a joyful embrace of the present.
Even the menu echoed their priorities: happiness and togetherness. Rather than focusing on strict symbolism, they chose dishes that their families loved.

“What we prioritized is the joy of our family and close friends,” Jaffy explained. “As long as they’re happy, then we’re happy.
At the end of the day, we just wanted our guests to have a good time, that alone symbolizes our prosperity.”

The couple also paid attention to what truly makes an event memorable: the smooth flow and the shared laughter over good food.

“What will make it memorable will be the food and the smoothness of the event’s flow,” Joan smiled. “That’s what we believe resonates the most.”
Their Ting Hun was more than a cultural rite, it was a reflection of their values as a couple: rooted in family, rich in meaning, and refreshed by authenticity.

For soon-to-weds, Jaffy and Joan’s story is a gentle reminder that the most beautiful celebrations are those that honor where you come from while expressing who you’ve become, a perfect harmony of tradition and love.
