Atom Ungson: Two decades of hosting with heart

For Atom Ungson, a career in hosting wasn’t something he chased—it found him in the most unexpected way. “Hosting just fell on my lap,” he shares. “I never planned it nor even imagined that I would get into it.”

It all started during his college years in Naga City. As the head of then-Senator Raul Roco’s youth arm in Bicol, Atom found himself organizing an overnight rally during the EDSA Dos movement. When the program hit a lull with no more speakers or performers, he took the stage and sang Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang. That spontaneous moment, simple as it seemed, would change his path forever.

The performance led to school concert invitations, eventually catching the eye of a local ABS-CBN producer. Atom was soon hosting a regional variety show, which became a three-year training ground that honed his confidence, timing, and wit. After college, he returned to Manila and briefly worked as a field reporter for GMA Network. But fate had other plans.

At his cousin’s wedding, he was asked to co-host with well-known emcee Paolo Clemente. That one event led to more, and Atom found himself saying yes to a new journey.

He joined Angelswink Productions under Paolo Clemente and Ces Aglipay, diving headfirst into wedding hosting. “The very first wedding they booked me on was October 10, 2005, at the Sofitel Tent,” he recalls. “And I was lucky to work right away with one of the best coordinators, Kutchie.”

Twenty years later, with close to 5,000 events under his belt, Atom still finds joy in every celebration. “I have never had to drag myself to an event,” he says. “That feeling of satisfaction when I know I helped give a couple the reception they dreamed of—that’s what drives me.”

Atom isn’t just a voice on a microphone. He is a mood-setter, a program weaver, and an expert in finding the perfect balance between fun and heartfelt.

“When people laugh at a joke, cry during a tender moment, or kiss because I dared them to—those are the moments that remind me why I do this,” he says. “Yes, even the 162 pairs of strangers I’ve made kiss at weddings!”

Beyond the laughter and applause, Atom treasures the trust of his clients. “When fellow suppliers or friends in the industry ask me to host their weddings, that really means a lot,” he adds. “It tells me I’ve done something right.”

One especially unforgettable memory? “I chipped my front tooth the night before a wedding and couldn’t see a dentist in time,” Atom recalls with a laugh. “So I hosted in Antonio’s Tagaytay while trying to hide my tooth with the mic the whole time. It was hard to laugh, but I powered through. The show must go on.”

Atom offers this advice to couples looking for the perfect host: “Know the kind of program you want—whether simple, grand, fun, or traditional. Then find a host whose style matches your personality and vision. Hosts help shape your story.”
