“You won’t forget my name because what is this that I am holding? A mic, and that is my name.”- an excerpt that I definitely remembered from his hosting during Manila Bridal Fair 2024 | Featured photo by Law Tapalla Photography
Mike Acuña has firmly established himself as one of the most charming and witty wedding hosts in the Philippines. Known for his ability to connect with audiences, Mike’s journey into wedding hosting is as unique as the experiences he creates for couples on their special day.
Mike’s foray into the world of wedding hosting began serendipitously in 2009. At the time, he was more recognized for his singing than his hosting skills. “Ah! Mike Acuña! The singer!” was how most people knew him. During one particular wedding reception, while performing his usual set, a coordinator approached him between songs. She noted how effortlessly he was engaging with the guests and asked if he had ever considered hosting. Mike humorously recalls asking, “Ma’am, parang ganyan po (points to who must have been Atom Ungson)?” The coordinator reassured him that she would teach him everything he needed to know. What followed was intense training, complete with strict instructions and the occasional harsh feedback if he didn’t deliver the spiels or program sequences correctly. It was a tough learning curve, but it taught him one invaluable lesson: there are no second takes in live events.
The transition from singing to hosting was natural for Mike. His love for language, vocabulary, and the power of words drove him to pursue hosting. He believes that effective communication is key to connecting with people and conveying the depth of emotions. For Mike, hosting is more than just announcing; it’s about using words to paint vivid pictures, emotions, and create a shared experience that resonates with everyone in the room.
Mike’s approach to hosting weddings goes beyond the usual spiels and gimmicks. He emphasizes the importance of program continuity, ensuring that the flow of the event is seamless and engaging. For him, hosting is like orchestrating a roller coaster of emotions, where the highs and lows keep the audience captivated. He advises aspiring hosts to master the program’s sequence and focus on spontaneity. “Get good at being spontaneous first,” he says, stressing that hyper-observance and practice are key.
One of Mike’s most memorable experiences as a host happened recently at Palacio de Memoria. Despite the elaborate setup, a sudden storm forced everyone indoors, where there was no sound system. Undeterred, Mike hosted ‘a cappella’ and even sang the couple’s first dance song, “Panalangin” by The APO Hiking Society, leading the guests in a heartfelt sing-along. The moment, which could have been a disaster, turned into a magical experience that went viral, showcasing Mike’s ability to turn challenges into unforgettable memories.
Challenges are part of the job, but Mike has learned to navigate them with grace. From battling self-doubt to ensuring he strikes the right balance between humor and sincerity, Mike approaches every event with the mindset that it requires his full focus and dedication. Trends in weddings may come and go, but Mike’s adaptability ensures that he remains a sought-after host, ready to tailor his approach to suit any couple’s vision. His goal is simple: to make every wedding he hosts a story worth telling.
