Carla Abellana’s best friend is behind their wedding cake masterpiece

When Pastry Chef Miko Aspiras posted on his Instagram account the caption, “My best friend’s wedding,” we just had to interview him on this towering wedding cake he made for Tom Rodriguez and Carla Abellana.

Instagram will load in the frontend.

“Carla (Cars as we’d like to call her) and I have been friends since grade school in OB Montessori Greenhills. We were always together and partnered up cause of our family names. We were always the first ones to be called and we were seat mates in most classes,” he tells Manila Bulletin Lifestyle.

As best friends, wedding plans and discussions were part of the conversations—even before meeting “the one.” The besties have been dreaming about this day. “Even before she met Tom, we were so sure I was going to make her wedding cake,” Miko continues. “But we started talking about it as soon as she got engaged last October 2020.”

Miko, who is now based in Sydney, Australia, revealed that it was tough planning with the ongoing pandemic. “It was hard to show my art via drawings and Viber messages. I would have loved to be more involved and to have more interaction with Carla and Tom, but I guess that’s the best we could do in the given situation.”

But despite the odds, Carla gave him the creative freedom to design that cake. “She would just give me some pointers like her color motif and choice of flowers. We’ve always leaned toward simple design, uncomplicated, and very spontaneous, and that’s what I love about the design.”

Pastry Chef Miko Aspiras made these flowers and had it sent to Manila.

So how did they pull it off? “I am so lucky to have my ‘padawan’ my former pastry sous chef, Chico Orcine, in my restaurant group in the Philippines. He executed my design and vision very well. I would draw my designs and give him specific instructions whataterials to use and he did it. Although I have to admit the cake that was present of Carla and Tom’s wedding was our first and only prototype. The design kept on evolving cause of some changes in the venue, size of the cake, etc… that we didn’t get the chance to practice.” As for the flowers, he made them and had it sent to Manila.

And, well, there’s always a first and now Miko tells us that he just might accept requests like these, depending on the situation. For inquiries, you may e-mail him at [email protected] or send him an inquiry via his Instagram account.
