What could be more romantic than some flowers, some chocolates and a little bling on Valentine’s Day? An engagement ring of course! Lord Of The Rings alum, Orlando Bloom had that in mind when he upped his Valentine’s Day game on February 14th, with a stunning cluster ring he presented to pop music royalty, Katy Perry.
The pair first sparked dating rumors in 2016 when they were seen flirting at a Golden Globes party. Soon, they were on every publication flaunting their relationship with appearances at events and vacations after their well-publicized split with their respective exes. Katy was briefly married to British comedian Russell Brand while Orlando was married to former Victoria’s Secret model, Australian-born Miranda Kerr with whom he has a son.
The pair broke up briefly in 2017 but officially confirmed their rekindled romance in February of 2018. A year after their official reunion, the singer, took to Instagram to share a picture of herself and her actor beau, to show off her ring “in full bloom”. Katy’s mother, Mary Hudson shortly after, confirmed their engagement with a Facebook post sharing images of the emotional proposal.
Now the ring. For a flamboyant artist like Katy who has been known to don bold fashion choices, it was surprising to learn that she was presented a ring with a more traditional design. Known as a cluster ring, the style became popular in the 1900s, but resurged in popularity after Prince Charles proposed to Princess Diana with ahuge sapphire ring surrounded by diamonds in 1981.Celebrities like Princess Diana, Sarah Ferguson, Princess Eugenie, and Lady Gaga have engagement rings of a similar design.
There has been an on-going debate on the composition of Katy’s ring as well as its cost. The flower-shaped ring with what appears to be a yellow gold shank features a deep pink center stone surrounded by eight smaller diamonds. The eye-catching middle gem has been speculated to be a rare type of ruby, a pink sapphire or even a fancy pink diamond. Various experts have projected different estimates for its value placing the ring from anywhere between $25,000 to a whopping $5 million! The vintage design of the precious bauble could even be a period piece instead ofbrand-new.
Netizens who were quick to point out the similarities between her ring and the ring given to Orlando’s former flame didn’t put a damper on the happy couple. They shared a snowy holiday photo since making their big announcement. Reports say they have a big engagement party planned but no date has been confirmed for their wedding.
